How exciting this last payroll was!  Employees’ smiles and the evident pride on their faces was absolutely priceless when they had to sign for their pay!  You may be asking “what is the big deal about that?”  Well, let me tell you...this is the first time for some to actually sign their name as opposed to a “+”!

Since being at COTP, at each payroll I would see several of our employees sign their name with a “+” because they did not know how to write their name.  This really impacted me and I felt a calling to help them but was unsure where to begin.  Then about six months ago, I really felt God placing it on my heart to teach some of our nannies how to write their names.  But doubts crept in…would they want to learn?  Could I teach them?  Did I have time to teach them?  Then at a payroll, one nanny came and signed with a “+” and hesitantly asked if I would teach her how to write her name.  When I said yes, she was instantly in smiles.  Another nanny also approached me and told me that no one had ever taught her how to write her name or read.  I volunteered to help her with writing her name.  Teaching someone to read, especially in a different language, is a challenge.  However, I started going over some sight words with her and I started reading a children’s Bible storybook in Creole to her so that she could start recognizing some words.  How excited this nanny was to have someone willing to try and teach her! Both of these nannies were so eager to learn and so focused.  They loved it so much that they practiced on their own and then would come and share their work with me.
Not long after working with those two nannies, I had other nannies tell me they wanted to learn how to write their names.  As much as I wanted to help them all, I had limited time due to my other roles and duties at COTP.  Then I heard about a literacy class starting at the school located next door to COTP.  The class was offered to all of our employees and several of the nannies and other employees decided to attend.  They were so excited to start school!!
I attended the first day of the class and it was wonderful to see so many of our employees in attendance.  Their excitement and eagerness to learn more are so evident and they love to share their homework with me.  This past payroll, three employees wrote their name for the first time when they came to pick up their pay.  Oh, that you could have seen the looks and smiles on their faces!!
Some of our employees and their families have not ever had the opportunity to go to school.  One way that Children of the Promise is attempting to help is by maintaining a school savings account for each employee.  When an employee contributes money to their account, COTP will match it up to a certain amount.  If you feel led to support this incredible opportunity and mission, please click on this link (http://childrenofthepromise.org/giving-catalog/school-savings-match/). I know that God will continue to work here in Haiti and I look forward to seeing His plans for the future unfold.

One month ago, I arrived at COTP!  The month has flown by and everything is going very well!  I'm still learning names of the kids, nannies and the other local Haitian staff.  There are so many names to remember.   I'm also still learning Creole.  I've been working on numbers and some specific phrases to help me in the office.  I still have a lot to learn yet.  However I feel like I'm picking up more than I realize.  I seem to understand what people are saying (if they speak slowly) but have a hard time answering them back in Creole.

A lot of fun things have happened since my last post!  My roommates and I went for a moto/quad ride to the market.  It was a beautiful ride with all the mountains around us!  We've had a few birthday parties for the kids.  I've gone out for dinner with the VanderPols and my roommate as well as a few short term volunteers.  We had a birthday party for my roommate last night where we played games and ate yummy cheesecake.  A few nights ago, it stormed really hard and afterwards we had an awesome sunset!

The view outside of our apartment!

A few nights ago, my roommates decided it would be fun to ask me a bunch of questions to learn more about me.  One of their questions was "if you could do one thing in the world and you didn't have to worry about the money to do it, what would you do?"  My answer was to do exactly what I'm doing right now!  It may be hot and we might have rats and cockroaches but I wouldn't trade it for anything!

This week has been going by so fast!  I worked in the office quite a bit this week since payroll is the beginning of the month.  It's been fun to watch and learn how payroll is done here since that is what I did back in MI.   I also have been working with two special needs boys and doing therapy with them. I haven't done much this week with them since I have been in the office more but I hope to continue doing it again shortly.  Today we took a few kids on a walk right outside of COTP.  It is so beautiful!
Love all the mountains!

The kids found every puddle to jump in.  They were having lots of fun but they were full of mud from head to toe!!  They would sit in the puddle and some even layed on their stomaches.  One boy lost his shoe in the mud so they had to look for it.

Earlier this week, we had a roommate bonding experience as we went on a rat hunt in our apartment.  Thankfully Roxy (one of the dogs here) came to our rescue and hauled it out for us.

Yesterday I spent a majority of the day being trained on the accounting side of things here.  Part of the day included getting ready for payroll on Monday.  The payroll part interests me since that is what I did back in MI.  I feel like I'm catching onto things so after payroll is done next week I will probably actually start doing some of the accounting with the help of Teri.  I also have been helping with two special needs kids.  My roommates and a few other volunteers have started doing therapy so currently I am in charge of doing two boys twice a day.  Today I got to play with two sweet little girls.  They are both about 1 years old and they both are very happy girls and full of smiles!!

Fun getaway to Puerta Plata, DR

Sunday morning, Wilson (Sheila's fiance) drove us to the border and we walked across the border to the Dominican Republic.  We then got a bus to Santiago where we had lunch at McDonalds.  Then we hopped on another bus to get to Puerta Plata and had to take a taxi to get to Gran Ventana which was our resort.   Our resort had several pools so the first night we decided to check out the quiet pool and no one was in it so we had the whole pool to ourselves.  After that we had dinner, watched some karaoke and then played some games.  Monday we went snorkeling which was fun!  This was my first time ever and there were some pretty cool fish!  We sat by the pool afterwards, went for a bike ride and went to the nearby grocery store that is similar to a Walmart.  It was funny to see my roommates get excited over little things.  In a few months I will probably be the same way.  I think we were there for over an hour but we got stocked up on food for a while.  The best part for them was getting cheese.  Today we had to get a taxi back to the bus stop, took a bus to Santiago and then another bus to Dajabon where Wilson was going to pick us up.  While in Santiago we went to get pizza at Domino's but we had limited time and no pesos.  Thankfully we went to the bank next door and at first they didn't seem to want to help but then they said they could help us.  We got the pizza about 5 minutes before the bus was supposed to leave so we had to run back to make sure we got on the bus.  I'm sure we got a lot of funny looks as we were running back to the bus station.  Three white girls running with skirts and flip flops on with pizza/breadsticks in our hands.  It was a nice getaway and it was nice to spend time with the roomies.  I'll have to post pictures later.
